Today, our Senior School community came together for a heartfelt Remembrance Day service, honouring the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars and subsequent conflicts, so that we might live in peace.
Our Head, Ms Ellott opened the service, reflecting on the profound loss endured by so many: “On Remembrance Day we gather together as a community to remember the sacrifice made by so many who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars and in subsequent conflicts, in order that we might live in peace.”
Our Head of School, Lucy then reminded us of the ongoing impact of war today: “We gather today under the shadow of war in Ukraine, in the Middle East and with conflicts elsewhere too. We remember today all those who are striving for peaceful resolutions to these conflicts, and we remember all those who suffer the terror and violence of war today.”
As part of our tribute, Year 8 pupil Arabella recited her original poem, ‘Counting the Echoes of War’. Her words brought a poignant reminder of the deep scars left by war and the enduring hope for peace:
In the stillness after the battle’s roar,
I begin counting the echoes of war,
Each sound a reminder of lives torn apart,
Each silence a wound on a weary heart…

Ms Ellott reminded us that, 110 years after the start of the First World War, poppies still grow on the battlefields of Europe, symbolising our commitment to remembrance and peace. She also shared that SCHS was once home to Battersea Boys School, and our war memorial honours the boys who studied here and went on to fight in the Second World War.
The service included a moving tribute to family members lost in past conflicts. Ms Ellott invited our Student Leadership Team: Helena, Becky, Izzy and Lucas to lay a wreath of remembrance at our school memorial, marking a solemn and reflective moment for all present.
Following the wreath-laying, Ms Ellott urged us to heed Arabella’s poem, finding hope where love conquers hatred and peace can be found. We observed a respectful two-minute silence, with the hauntingly beautiful notes of ‘The Last Post’ played on the trumpet by Year 10 pupil Phoebe.
Our Remembrance Day service was a reminder not only of the past but of our ongoing commitment to peace.
