Last week, our Prep and Senior Schools came together for four uplifting Carol Services at All Saints Church, Tooting. The historic church, described by Sir John Betjeman as “the cathedral of South London”, was filled with music, readings, and festive spirit as pupils, staff, and families gathered to celebrate the season.

The Prep School Carol Service on 9th December featured enchanting performances from girls across the school. Year 3’s lively rendition of Merrily to Bethlehem and Year 4’s Il est Né, le Divin Enfant showcased both enthusiasm and skill. Year 5 and Year 6 Chamber Choirs added a beautiful touch with Rain Tree Carol and a moving performance of Away in a Manger. Reflections such as Rabindranath Tagore’s Light and Maya Angelou’s Amazing Peace, read by our Head, Ms Ellott, reminded us all of the enduring values of kindness and compassion at Christmas.

The Senior School’s Carol Services on 10th and 11th of December brought a stirring mix of traditional and modern carols to life. The Schola Cantorum and Chamber Choir captivated the congregation with Benjamin Britten’s Balulalow and the evocative Jesus Christ the Apple Tree. Readings by pupils from Year 7 to Sixth Form, including passages from Isaiah and Luke, provided moments of reflection.

Each service reflected SCHS’s core values of kindness, integrity, compassion and respect. The congregational hymns – timeless favourites such as Once in Royal David’s City, Silent Night, and Hark! the Herald Angels Sing – brought voices together in a shared celebration of hope and joy.

In the spirit of giving, the services also raised funds for meaningful causes. The Prep School supported PHASE Worldwide, helping to empower girls and improve education in remote regions of Nepal, while the Senior School chose The Baytree Centre, a Brixton-based charity supporting women and girls. These initiatives underline SCHS’s commitment to making a difference, locally and globally.

As the final notes of the organ filled All Saints Church, the warmth, reflection, and joy of the season were palpable. The carol services served as a powerful reminder of the importance of community, generosity, and the enduring light of love during the festive season.

SCHS is immensely proud of all the pupils, staff, and families whose contributions made these services so memorable.
