At Streatham & Clapham High School (SCHS), we believe that education extends far beyond the classroom. Our commitment to community engagement and Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB) is woven into every aspect of school life, from our curriculum to the cultural experiences we offer our pupils. Yesterday’s sushi demonstration was a perfect example of this, a hands-on, interactive session that not only introduced pupils to the art of sushi-making but also deepened their appreciation for Japanese culture and global cuisine.

Food is a universal language that brings people together, and our sushi demonstration was no exception. Led by expert chefs, the demonstration guided pupils through the intricate process of preparing sushi, from perfecting the sticky rice to rolling and cutting maki with precision. But this session wasn’t just about food – it was about fostering curiosity, broadening horizons and celebrating cultural diversity. By engaging with Japanese cuisine in such an immersive way, pupils not only learned practical skills but also developed a deeper respect for a culture that may have been unfamiliar to them before.

At SCHS, we are proud to be a school that values and actively promotes inclusivity. Our EDIB initiatives ensure that every pupil feels seen, valued and respected. Events like the sushi demo help bring these values to life, providing opportunities for pupils to engage with different traditions, cuisines and perspectives. Food is an essential part of identity, and sharing it is a powerful way to connect with others. By incorporating cultural experiences like this into school life, we create spaces where pupils can celebrate their own heritage while also learning from and about others. These experiences foster empathy, understanding, and a sense of global citizenship – qualities that are essential in today’s interconnected world.

Our school community is made up of pupils, staff, families, and local partners, all of whom contribute to the vibrant and inclusive environment that makes SCHS special. The sushi demonstration was a reminder of how food, culture and shared experiences can strengthen our sense of belonging. It also reflects our broader commitment to working with diverse voices, whether through partnerships, outreach programmes, or events that celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of our school. At SCHS, learning is about so much more than academics – it’s about developing a sense of community, embracing diversity, and ensuring that every pupil feels a true sense of belonging. And sometimes, it starts with something as simple as making sushi together.
