“Our curriculum is independent, engaging and inspiring. We have rigorous academic standards and focus on the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science & Computing.”

Helen Loach, Head of Prep

At Streatham & Clapham Prep School, we offer a dynamic and engaging curriculum with rigorous academic standards. Our core subjects are English and Mathematics, while Science and other subjects enrich our continually diversifying curriculum.

Our curriculum is designed to inspire a love of learning, foster intellectual curiosity, and develop each girl’s full potential. From Nursery to Year 6, our school offers a broad and balanced curriculum that combines academic rigour with creative expression, physical education and personal development.

English – Focusing on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, our English curriculum is designed to develop strong communication abilities. Pupils explore a wide range of literature, enhancing their comprehension, vocabulary and critical thinking. Creative writing and presentations are key focus areas, encouraging self-expression and confidence.

Mathematics – The mathematics curriculum builds a strong foundation in numerical fluency, problem-solving and logical reasoning. Through engaging activities and real-world applications, pupils develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. The programme is structured to challenge all abilities, from mastering basic arithmetic to exploring advanced topics including algebra and geometry. Girls at the Prep embrace maths and tackle challenges with resilience and determination.

Science – Science at the Prep school is hands-on and inquiry-based, sparking curiosity about the natural world. Pupils explore biology, chemistry, and physics through experiments, investigations and outdoor learning. The curriculum emphasises scientific thinking, encouraging girls to ask questions, form hypotheses, and draw conclusions based on evidence.

Art and Design – The art and design curriculum encourages creativity, imagination and self-expression. Pupils explore various media, including painting, drawing, sculpture and digital art. Projects are often integrated with other subjects, allowing girls to express their understanding of the world around them through visual means. We explore a wide range of art and artists, not just those from the Western tradition. Our approach includes appreciating works by diverse artists from various cultures, time periods and backgrounds.

Drama – Drama helps pupils develop their self-confidence, communication skills and ability to work as part of a team. Through acting, role-playing, and scriptwriting, girls explore different perspectives and learn to express their emotions and ideas effectively. Drama is integrated into the curriculum and supported by school productions and performances. Over 90 of our Year 4 to Year 6 pupils engage in LAMDA lessons.

Music – Music is integral to the Prep school experience, with every pupil participating in singing, instrument playing and music theory. The curriculum includes opportunities for individual and group performances, fostering teamwork and confidence. The school also offers extracurricular music activities, including choirs, orchestras and instrumental lessons. All Year 2 pupils learn to play the recorder, and we are proud to offer violin lessons to all pupils in Year 3.

Modern Foreign Languages (MfL) – MfL is an essential part of the Prep school curriculum, with pupils beginning their journey in French from an early age. The language programme focuses on developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through interactive and immersive methods. Cultural exploration is also emphasised, helping students appreciate and understand the global context of language learning.

History and Geography – We are proud of our diversified humanities offer where we strive to embed cross curricular links with diversity and inclusion as our focus. Our humanities lessons actively promote creativity, curiosity and competence in the progression of key skills across both History and Geography.

Physical Education (PE) – PE is vital for promoting health, fitness and well-being. An inclusive, all girl, sport offer is at the heart of our offer. The Prep school offers a diverse PE curriculum that includes gymnastics, dance, athletics, and team sports like netball and hockey. The school emphasises participation, skill development and the enjoyment of physical activity. Girls are encouraged to take part in competitive sports and extra-curricular clubs, fostering a spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship.

Religious Education (RE) – RE at the Prep school is inclusive and explorative, providing pupils with knowledge about different religions, beliefs and worldviews. The curriculum promotes respect, understanding, and tolerance, encouraging girls to consider their values and beliefs while learning about those of others.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) – PSHE is central to the Prep school’s mission of nurturing well-rounded individuals. The programme covers topics such as mental health, relationships, digital safety, and economic well-being. Pupils learn essential life skills, including decision-making, empathy and resilience. The school also emphasises mindfulness and well-being, helping girls manage stress and build positive relationships.
