At Streatham & Clapham High School, Personal, Social, Health, and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) plays a central role in developing well-rounded, confident and responsible individuals. The PSHCE curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to navigate life’s challenges, make informed decisions, and contribute positively to society.

The PSHCE programme at SCHS is integral to the school’s holistic approach to education. It focuses on nurturing students’ emotional intelligence, social awareness, and moral values alongside their academic development. By addressing key areas such as mental health, relationships, citizenship, and economic well-being, the curriculum helps pupils understand themselves and the world around them.

The PSHCE curriculum is structured around several core themes:

1. Health and Wellbeing: Pupils learn about physical and mental health, understanding the importance of self-care, balanced lifestyles and managing stress. The curriculum encourages positive attitudes towards health and provides practical strategies for maintaining well-being.

2. Relationships: The curriculum fosters respectful and healthy relationships, covering topics such as friendship, family dynamics, consent and communication. Pupils explore the importance of empathy, kindness and respect in building strong relationships.

3. Living in the Wider World: This theme helps pupils understand their role as active citizens in a diverse and interconnected world. Topics include rights and responsibilities, environmental stewardship, and the impact of their actions on society and the planet.

4. Personal Development: PSHCE at SCHS emphasises personal growth, encouraging pupils to build self-esteem, resilience and independence. The curriculum supports pupils in setting goals, making informed decisions and preparing for the challenges of adulthood.

PSHCE as part of the Curriculum

PSHCE is not taught in isolation but is woven into the broader curriculum and school life. The values and principles of PSHCE are reflected in the school’s ethos, promoting a positive and inclusive environment where every pupil feels valued and supported. Lessons are interactive and discussion-based, allowing students to express their views, ask questions and engage with real-world issues.

SCHS places a strong emphasis on citizenship and community involvement. The PSHCE curriculum encourages pupils to participate in community service, charitable initiatives and social action projects. This hands-on approach helps pupils develop a sense of responsibility and a commitment to making a positive difference in their communities.

The school’s commitment to pastoral care complements the PSHCE programme, ensuring that pupils have the support they need to thrive emotionally and socially. The Deputy Head (Pastoral) works closely with pupils and staff to provide guidance, address concerns, and promote a culture of care and respect.

PSHCE at SCHS prepares pupils for the future by equipping them with essential life skills. The programme covers financial literacy, career planning, and digital citizenship, helping pupils navigate the complexities of the modern world. By fostering critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and informed decision-making, the curriculum empowers pupils to lead fulfilling and responsible lives.
