We are very proud of our Head, Ms Cathy Ellott, as well as all the teachers, Sixth Form students and parents, who completed the Battersea Half Marathon during half term, raising over £9,000 collectively in support of charity, Masicorp. Masicorp has been working in the township of Masiphumelele, Cape Town, for over 25 years with the mission of breaking the cycle of poverty through education.

Head, Ms Ellott, said “Having never run further than 5k, and never run a race as an adult, it is the wonderful work of Masicorp supporting the community of Masiphumelele in South Africa, that has inspired me to take on this half marathon challenge. Their vital work providing education, health, and tackling period poverty aligns powerfully with Streatham & Clapham High School’s values and is a charity we have long supported.”

Ms Thane-Woodhams, Director of Drama highlighted the urgent need saying, “The women and girls in Masiphumelele experience terrible conditions when on their periods… poor sanitation, lack of privacy and appalling period poverty. So ashamed are the girls, they stay home rather than go to school, missing out on vital education, creating makeshift towels out of items not fit for purpose. When I heard this, it put a few things into perspective. If I could raise some money to provide them with proper sanitary products, hopefully this might help.”

A huge thank you to everyone who has sponsored and cheered on our runners — your contribution has made a real difference. If you would like to support this worthy cause it’s still not too late. You can sponsor Ms Thane-Woodhams on her Just Giving Page here.
