Three of our Year 6 pupils recently attended the GDST Diversity & Inclusion Forum, an inspiring day dedicated to celebrating cultural heritage, fostering understanding and embracing identity. The event gave pupils from across the GDST family of schools the opportunity to learn more deeply about the histories and traditions of Somali and Gypsy Roma cultures.

Our pupils engaged enthusiastically in creative, hands-on workshops, including a traditional weaving session that highlighted the skills passed down through generations. A standout moment was the chance to design their own Dabqaad, a traditional Somali incense burner, which opened up thoughtful discussions about scent, memory and belonging.

These experiences not only deepened the girls’ cultural awareness but also offered a meaningful platform to reflect on their own identities and the diverse community we’re proud to be part of at Streatham & Clapham High School.

EDIB at SCHS: A Community Where Everyone Belongs

As part of the GDST, Streatham & Clapham High School is committed to fostering a culture where every pupil feels seen, heard and valued. Our EDIB vision is to ensure that equality, diversity, inclusion and belonging are not simply aspirational ideas, but embedded in our day-to-day life. Events like the GDST D&I Forum support this mission by giving pupils the chance to engage with different perspectives and histories in active, respectful ways.

Within our school community, we encourage open dialogue, celebrate difference and equip pupils with the confidence to stand up for what is right. From curriculum choices to assemblies and student-led initiatives, we ensure that our school remains a welcoming and representative environment for all.

We are proud that our pupils not only embrace these values but live them, bringing curiosity, compassion and joy to everything they do.
