Last week, Year 8 pupils at Streatham & Clapham High School took a powerful step towards self-empowerment, participating in an inspiring self-defence workshop led by the charity Action Breaks Silence. More than just a practical session, the workshop encouraged pupils to challenge stereotypes, build resilience and reframe the way they view their own strength.
The session focused on long-term prevention, helping pupils understand the reality of gender-based violence. It also provided an opportunity to explore ideas of femininity, encouraging pupils to take ownership of their bodies and recognise their dynamic strength – both mentally and physically.
Throughout the workshop, pupils developed confidence in their own capacities, learning how to move beyond fear and victimisation. They explored the science behind fear, adrenaline responses and verbal diffusion skills, gaining practical strategies to navigate difficult situations. By identifying target points on a perpetrator’s body and practising resistance techniques, they equipped themselves with essential self-defence skills to feel safer and more in control.
More than anything, the session was a reminder that strength comes in many forms. At SCHS, we are committed to ensuring our pupils feel empowered in every aspect of their lives. They not only gained valuable self-defence techniques but also the confidence to walk through the world with resilience, awareness and a powerful sense of self-belief.
