Dr Eleanor Drage, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge’s Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, specialist in feminist and anti-racist approaches to AI ethics, visited Streatham & Clapham High School on Monday 19 January, to talk about AI and education. In a wide-ranging and thought-provoking presentation, Dr Drage explored AI in universities, schools and the workplace, the role of gender in AI experimentation and development, and the importance of political as well as procedural conversations around AI. We were introduced to important figures and organisations working to make AI more inclusive and ethical, and were invited to consider what we want for the future of this technology.

Head, Cathy Ellott concluded the evening by reflecting how important it was that we were gathered together, in person, on a January evening, to discuss and debate the place that AI occupies, and will occupy in the lives of parents, teachers and students in coming years. Connection, collaborative dialogue and reflection will be crucial.

We were delighted to welcome colleagues and students in the SSLP (Southwark Schools Learning Partnership) to SCHS, with Kingsdale, The Charter School and St. Saviour’s & St. Olave’s all in attendance. We look forward to continued collaboration on AI within the SSLP.
