Streatham & Clapham High School is proud to celebrate alumna Nadine White, a multi-award-winning journalist and filmmaker whose work has made her one of Britain’s leading voices reporting on race, justice and inequality.

This year, Nadine has been nominated for Social Justice & Equality Champion of the Year at The Community, Corporate & Culture Awards, sponsored by HSBC, recognising the impact of her journalism. She has also been shortlisted for the UK Black Comms Network Trailblazer Awards, which celebrate Black professionals shaping the future of media, communications and public life.

In 2021, Nadine became Britain’s first dedicated Race Correspondent, reporting on issues affecting Black, Asian and minoritised communities. Over more than a decade in journalism, she has held key roles at major publications including The Voice, Britain’s longest-running Black newspaper; HuffPost UK, where she led coverage on race; and The Independent, where her reporting helped shape national conversations and brought under-reported stories to light.

Her work has been recognised in the UK Parliament and by Amnesty International, as well as at the British Journalism Awards, and she was previously honoured on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.

Nadine began her journalism career in local media in 2012, rising to editor-in-chief of Vision Newspaper by 2014, and later worked as a producer at Choice FM, Britain’s first mainstream Black radio station.

Alongside her journalism, Nadine is an award-winning filmmaker. Her debut documentary, Barrel Children: The Families Windrush Left Behind (2023), which she independently produced, entered the UK box office charts and screened internationally. In 2024, she became the first woman to receive the Menelik Shabazz Legacy Award at the Windrush Caribbean Film Festival and is currently working on the sequel.

During this period, Nadine also founded Black Current News, an independent media platform dedicated to reporting on Black life, culture and current affairs. The platform has already reached more than one million people on social media and earned her a nomination for the Women in Journalism Georgina Henry Prize for Innovation at the Media Freedom Awards.

In 2024, Nadine was named among nine Black women “fighting to make the UK a more equal place” by Glamour magazine. Her cultural impact has also been recognised by the BBC and The Guardian, which have described her as “making Black history now” and among Britain’s modern Black heroes.

Of Jamaican heritage, Nadine has seen her work recognised by the Jamaican government and, in 2025, was named among a select group of globally influential Caribbean figures by Carib Biz Network.

Her work across journalism and film has earned numerous honours, including recognition as one of the Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) globally.

Reflecting on her journey, Nadine said: “Streatham & Clapham High School was an environment that encouraged intellectual independence and academic excellence. I joined the school during an extremely difficult period in my life, having lost my father just weeks before starting. He had been deeply invested in my future and keen for me to be enrolled there. The care and support I received during that time, particularly from Ms Mary Kpobie, provided some stability, encouragement and belief when I needed it most.

“My time at SCHS helped equip me with the confidence, discipline and curiosity that have shaped my career. Just as importantly, the sacrifices of my family, especially my mother, and the resilience of the communities that raised me instilled in me the tenacity to pursue truth, the courage to take up space, and the belief that I could contribute meaningfully to society through my work in the public interest. I will always remain grateful for the role SCHS played in helping shape my sense of possibility.”
