On Wednesday 21 January, Sixth Form students from Streatham & Clapham High School, Putney High School and Sutton High School were invited by the US Embassy to attend the Freedom 250 lecture series, which explored the story and legacy of the American Revolution.
The event featured an expert panel of speakers from the University of Oxford, Benjamin Franklin House, the American Museum & Gardens, and the National Archives. Students gained valuable insight into the causes and consequences of the American Revolution, as well as the enduring and complex shared history between the United Kingdom and the United States.
This visit built on our growing relationship with the US Embassy, following several previous trips and collaborative learning opportunities that bring global perspectives directly into our students’ educational experience. These ongoing partnerships reflect our commitment to giving students access to real-world opportunities to understand more about politics, history and the forces that shape the world today.
At Streatham & Clapham High School, our academic ethos is rooted in fostering a love for learning, intellectual curiosity and the pursuit of excellence. SCHS encourages students to think independently, engage critically with ideas and connect their classroom studies to broader societal contexts – preparing them not just for examinations, but for life beyond school.
History and Politics students particularly valued the opportunity to deepen their understanding beyond the classroom, engaging directly with leading historians and nationally significant institutions. The visit provided rich context for their studies and encouraged thoughtful discussion about revolution, democracy and international relationships.
The afternoon was an inspiring and intellectually stimulating experience, reinforcing the importance of academic curiosity, global engagement and learning beyond the curriculum. At SCHS we remain committed to expanding opportunities that connect our students with leading experts and organisations around the world, empowering them to become informed, articulate and globally aware citizens.
