Dear Parents,

I hope that the girls have been having a super time in Activities Week enjoying a different kind of learning as part of our commitment to a holistic educational vision. Whether taking on new physical challenges and risks, working as a team, learning from the battlefields of Normandy, experiencing the world of work, or preparing a compelling university application, this week will have accelerated the girls’ sense of their identity now and who they want to become.

The future matters, and this is why sustainability is such an important focus for us as a school. We are very proud of our track record as the most sustainable school in the GDST with our commitment to low energy use, recycling, minimising waste, and prioritising eco-friendly choices wherever possible, from cleaning products to buildings.

This week the GDST published the findings from its recent sustainability survey of 10,000 students in Years 5 to 13 across the Trust’s 25 schools, and 71% feel confident about explaining sustainability, with 66% believe their generation can make a difference. When asked about how they feel about the environment, the older students reported a rise in feelings of worry and overwhelm about the scale of the environmental challenge. The blasting heat last week added a new sense of urgency to the climate changes we see all around us, and the impact on wildlife as well as on our own work, fun and wellbeing.

Over half of the survey’s respondents wanted more experiential and outdoor learning opportunities and there is a strong thread of a desire to feel more connected to the natural world. I feel exactly the same, and a focus for the school in the coming year, as well as our renewed sports provision that I described last week, is to continue to develop opportunities for outdoor learning, and to continue to cultivate a growing awareness of and love for the wonders of the natural world.

Over the summer, do encourage your daughter to notice and take pleasure in the natural world around her, and I urge you as a family to renew your commitment to acting sustainably in those daily habits that collectively make such a difference. With electricity bills on the rise again, this makes good sense in terms of our focus on financial learning too!

Next week, we remain busy and purposeful with our House Music Competition on Monday, Sports Awards on Monday evening, and then our performance of “Matilda” on Tuesday, with the awarding of the House Cup in our final assembly, and term ending at 12:30.

Thank you for your kind and generous support this year to me and my wonderful team. I am so proud of the talent and commitment of my staff – the teachers and support team.  Our journey Towards Wisdom Unafraid has been full of triumphs and proud successes, but with struggles and sadness too. I am very grateful for the joyful optimism of our school family, and continue daily to count my blessings. I look forward very much to the start of our new year on Monday 7 September (with Year 7 and 12 Induction on Friday 4 September).

Wishing you all a wonderful summer.

Best wishes,

Cathy Ellott
