The SCHS Boat Club was delighted to host their first ever fundraising dinner last Friday, welcoming around a hundred students, family members and staff for a delicious two course meal. It was such a joy to welcome champion rower Sophie Chumas as the guest speaker. Hearing about her rowing and professional careers, her experience of rowing at Durham University and then for three years with Leander, and her working life as a woman in engineering was inspiring.
Reflecting on his first five years as the SCHS Head Coach of Rowing, Mr Ian Shore shared the wonderful progress made so far, and the bright horizons for the programme as it develops and grows. Highlights include a Year 11 and a Year 10 student, being selected to represent the region at the Inter Regional Championships taking place in April; a significant milestone for the club as the first individuals from SCHS to achieve selection at a representative level. Last September, staff and parents attended a Boat Naming Ceremony at Barn Elms, commemorating the launch of two new boats: ‘Streatham Sisters’ and ‘Fore Shore’ named to reflect the ethos and spirit of SCHS.

Just a few years ago, the rowing club comprised a small group of students, relying on borrowed equipment. Now with a thriving membership exceeding 100 rowers from Years 9 to 13 and a commendable record of victories, SCHS Rowing Club is truly thriving!
Thank you to the boat club members and families for the wonderful prizes that were donated for our fundraising raffle: the generosity of donors was greatly appreciated.
The SCHS Boat Club has a bright future and looks forward to continuing to develop and growing their community and impact even further.
