MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy visits SCHS

Streatham & Clapham High School were delighted to welcome Bell Ribeiro-Addy, Labour MP for Streatham and SCHS alumna, to the senior school yesterday.

During assembly, Ms Ribeiro-Addy answered student’s questions, discussing her journey to becoming an MP, including her involvement with the National Union of Students (NUS) at university, campaigning against racism. While studying law, she had the opportunity to work part-time for Diane Abbott, the first black female MP, which led to her work as a political advisor.

During her talk Ms Ribeiro-Addy emphasised the value of volunteering; advice she had received while at SCHS. She highlighted how it not only benefits the community and provides work experience, but also creates opportunities for future career prospects.

Talking about her experience as an MP she stressed the importance of women taking up leadership positions, to increase representation, but also to advocate for issues affecting women.

MP Ribeiro-Addy concluded her talk urging SCHS girls to seize the opportunities available to them at school and also to choose a degree or educational route they are interested; more specific paths could be pursued later on. “There are so many options open to you” she assured the girls, “Don’t let anyone tell you any different.”

Thank you Bell Ribeiro-Addy for sharing your story with us; truly a notable alumnae and woman to inspire us as we celebrate International Women’s Day this week.
